French entrepreneur Jacques Laurent built the 14-room Hotel Carl Gustaf in 1991 after he had been vacationing with his family on St. Bart’s for years, which means that he knew the perfect spot for his idyllic island hideaway. Unlike most of the island’s top-tier properties, The Carl (as those in the know call it) isn’t right on the beach. Instead it occupies a spot on a steep hillside in the town of Gustavia, overlooking the main yacht-filled harbor. Situated directly on Lorient Beach, this relatively affordable hotel makes up for its modest design with a prime location on the water.
